2012 - SHORT COURSE #1 Brown Stock Washing and Screening
Course Leader: Brian Gallagher, P.Eng - GL&V USA Inc
Brian Gallagher is currently a Business Manager with GL&V USA, Inc, in Nashua, New Hampshire. He has spent the last 30 years working primarily with screening and washing in chemical pulp mills, and has visited and worked with hundreds of mills in over 50 countries. He graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1982 with a BASc in Mechanical Engineering. While still in university, he began working with Ingersoll-Rand Canada in Vancouver as an Application Engineer before moving up through IRCI, Beloit Corporation, and later GL&V in a number of positions including Product Manager, Director of Brown Stock Systems, and Director – Product Group.
Over the years he has been awarded seven U.S. Patents related to screening, washing, and bleaching, with many corresponding foreign patents. He led several development projects, including those that resulted in the HI-Q® Rejects Separator, and the Stingray and Luthi screen rotors. He was involved with the TAPPI Improving Screening and Cleaning Efficiencies short course from 1991 through 2005, for the first five years as a presenter but after that as the course chairman. He has participated in many other TAPPI events as either session chair or presenter.

2012 - SHORT COURSE #2 Process Control Optimization - An Introduction
Course Leader: Doug Nelson, P.Eng - ProNamics Control Inc
This one-day training course will provide participants with a broad understanding of process control optimization fundamentals. You will learn how to recognize poorly performing control loops and how to improve performance. The course topics include: understanding the cost of variability, identifying control loop health problems, using the Lambda tuning method to achieve the desired response to disturbances, identifying opportunities for advanced control strategies, and analytical loop troubleshooting techniques. Mill optimization survey examples and computer simulation demos are used to illustrate the main concepts.
Agenda
08:30 – 9:30 Introduction & process variability basics
9:00 – 10:00 Process dynamics / Loop Health Issues
10:00-10:30 Lab/Demo – Loop Dynamics and Loop Health Problems
10:30 - 12:00 Understanding control loop performance / Lambda Tuning
12:30 – 13:00 Lunch (provided)
12:30 – 1:30 Lab/Demo – Controller Tuning / Limits of feedback control
1:30 – 2:30 Opportunities for Cascade, Ratio and Feed-forward control
2:30 - 3:00 Lab/Demo - Cascade Control
3:00 – 3:30 Analytical Troubleshooting techniques
3:30 – 4:00 Lab/ Demo – Control Loop Troubleshooting
4:00 – 4:30 Wrap Up and Discussion
Who Should Attend:
The course is primarily intended for process engineers and operations personnel who want to improve their ability to optimize process control performance. Process and instrument design engineers have also found this course to be very useful. The course leader is Doug Nelson, P Eng, an independent consultant and recognized industry expert in the field of process control.
Course Leader
Doug Nelson, P.Eng. has over 25 years of industrial process control experience in the pulp and paper industry. He has conducted over one hundred process control optimization surveys at pulp and paper mills, often resulting in substantial improvements in product quality and process efficiency. He is a recognized training expert, regularly conducting process control training courses for engineers, E&I technicians and operations personnel. He has authored papers on dryer control, loop performance monitoring systems, control valve selection and the uses of process simulation in optimization surveys.
